Thailand Plans Rice DNA Tests to Boost Exports Monday, 23/09/2013, 02:31 GMT+7 The Thai government has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Kasetsart University (KU) to build a DNA testing laboratory which will establish genuine Thai rice to allay buyer fears that rice from neighboring countries is being mixed with Thai rice. The Commerce Ministry says that the move will help boost rice exports The new laboratory will begin DNA tests on rice with both government and private traders in the next six months. Earlier, local sources in Thailand said that rice from Cambodia and Vietnam is getting mixed with Thai rice because farmers and traders want to benefit from the high purchase prices offered by the government under the rice mortgage program. Thailand’s rice exports declined about 30% year-on-year to around 7 million tons in 2013, and stands at around 2.9 million tons in January – June 2013, down about 17% from the previous year.
