Honduras rice production is expected to increase about 200,000 tons in 2017, according to head of the Department of Science and Technology (Dicta) attached to the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (SAG), according to La Tribuna.
The official estimated the paddy rice production at around 180,000 tons. But he noted that it ould reach up to 200,000 tons the use of resistant varieties and higher yield.
The demand in the country is estimated at around 380,000 tons (basis paddy), according to the official.
The USDA estimates Honduras to produce 109,000 tons of paddy (around 70,000 tons of milled rice) from around 26,000 hectares. It estimates Honduras to import about 150,000 tons of rice in MY 2017-18 (October - September) to meet a consumption demand of around 233,000 tons.
